I just picked up some new gear to try out from XOSKIN. They design gear for ultra running that helps keep you dry, chafe free and comfortable. The plan is to use this going forward on my personal challenges, FKT attempts and maybe even an ultra marathon in 2024. I will post follow-up videos on my thoughts as I use the gear. One thing I've never understood about the Duplex ,and it sounds like this tent, is why not give a couple more inches overhang of the fly over the floor and eliminate rain splash back and the chance of the floor from pushing out. The tent is so light to begin with why not eliminate these problems? It would only add a couple of ounces. Those of us that camp in the mountains can't find level spots very often.

    thanks for the review. Why not add clips to the fly sides that don't open up so that you can disconnect them from the ground and open the flys fully? You have peak tieouts so the tent will still stay taut. I don't know why Zpacks doesn't do this. Am I missing something?

    • @LeonidasontheTrail
      @LeonidasontheTrail 2 месяца назад

      Its a good point, you could definitely modify it back to a similar design with the clips like the original. You would need to mod a way to hold the short side door back but that shouldn't be a big deal.

    You have the head and foot ends the wrong way around. It is wider at the taller end (50") to accommodate mummy shaped pads and narrower at the foot end (44") for the same reason. If you need convincing, look at the product description and photos on their product page and their set up video.

      @@LeonidasontheTrail No worries! By the way, I liked your comment about the doors - the correct sleeping position does have the annoyance of feeling more closed-in at the head-end because of the door arrangement. I wonder if future versions will allow the user to tie back either or both doors on each side? I personally would prefer that option, like on the Duplex.

    Dont stuff dyneema! Fold it keeping it flat as opposed to a cylinder. My tent has lasted so much longer than previous ones. The thermarest pump sack makes a good bag for a 2p dyneema tent making it duel use.

    This is a different take on the offset duo and more of a practical review and comparison to the duplex. I think I would prefer the rainbow door. Thoughts? 🦑

    • @LeonidasontheTrail
      @LeonidasontheTrail 2 месяца назад

      I’m still undecided on the doors. I didn’t like that the rainbow door generally fell out of the tent and into the wet, but the new door needing to be tied up to be out of the way is kind of annoying in certain situations.

  • @lucybarrington4634
    @lucybarrington4634 4 месяца назад

    I love it. I have always preferred a bear canister. It’s slightly amusing to me how UL backpacking has become such a competition with some people on RUclips that they don’t even want to carry an extra pair of socks or a chapstick and their first aid kit consists of a single bandaid and an Imodium pill. You really laid out the case for bear canisters well. There are other ways to help keep your weight reasonably low and still enjoy your hike, get a good nights sleep and not have the aggravation of a food bag to hang or the worry over bears and other critters.

    • @LeonidasontheTrail
      @LeonidasontheTrail 6 месяцев назад

  • @seanwilson6521
    @seanwilson6521 6 месяцев назад

    More relevant than ever. Four out of five hangs I saw on my AT thru weren't going to stop a bear at any given camp I stayed. I took great pride (and way too much time), perfecting my technique. I will never hang again. Many areas around shelters showed how much damage hanging has caused. Now adays, a kit can easily absorb the additional weight. Clearly, people don't remember packs used to weigh over forty pounds plus.

    After a couple more years, how are you feeling about the pack, and the choice to go bear can for most trips? I'm thinking about doing the same even for east coast trips, for many similar reasons as you. The UL frameless version of this pack has me salivating. Thoughts?

    • @LeonidasontheTrail
      @LeonidasontheTrail Год назад

      I like it enough that I bought another and gave my wife the original. I needed a bigger torso to make the carry a bit more comfortable. I still wish Jan would make a version in Ultra100 but so far, nothing has come up for sale. I have contemplated taking mine apart, using it for a pattern and re-making the pack in Ultra100. I carry a bear can for all trips now except for FKT attempts. I did carry the can on a couple of them but I decided to go sans can for the super fast trips. I determined when I am only sleeping 3 hours and the food is all sealed and powder, the chance of an animal encounter is low enough that I am taking that risk.

    • @LeonidasontheTrail
      @LeonidasontheTrail Год назад

      The wrap around pocket on the back makes up for side pockets in my use as I never can reach the side pockets on most packs. I added hip belt pockets from Zpacks to mine but now they have the option to come with hip belt pockets when you order. I also eventually added shoulder strap water bottle holders as that worked better for me and helped with a bit of weight transfer.
